Format Matrix

Supported Image Formats & Specifications

PNGLossless

Lossless with full alpha, so screenshots, logos and anything with sharp edges come back pixel-for-pixel. The price is size.

Alpha: Full alpha channel•Size: Largest of the five for photographs
JPGLossy

The oldest lossy format here and still the smallest option for photographs at a given quality. It cannot store transparency.

Alpha: None — alpha is flattened onto white•Size: Smallest for photos
WebPLossy or lossless

The modern default: roughly a quarter to a third smaller than JPG at the same visual quality, with transparency and animation supported.

Alpha: Full alpha channel•Size: 25–35% smaller than JPG at equal quality
AVIFLossy or lossless

The newest of the set, built for photographs. Smallest files of all five, at the cost of slower encoding and patchier older-browser support.

Alpha: Full alpha channel•Size: 30–50% smaller than JPG at equal quality
GIFLossy palette

A 256-colour palette that is only worth keeping for short loops. Photographs usually get bigger when you convert to it.

Alpha: 1-bit only•Size: Grows with photographic content
HEICHEVC input

HEIC is a high-efficiency photo format commonly used by iPhones. It is supported as an input and can be converted to PNG, JPG, WebP, AVIF or GIF.

Alpha: May include transparency•Size: Often smaller than JPEG at similar quality
HEIFHEIF input

HEIF is a container for high-efficiency images. It is supported as an input and can be converted to PNG, JPG, WebP, AVIF or GIF.

Alpha: May include transparency•Size: Depends on the image codec and quality
